About the Office of Copyright

The Nova Southeastern University Office of Copyright was established in 2014 in order to facilitate and educate students, faculty and staff in the proper use of copyrighted material and maintain compliance with the University’s Copyright Policy. The revolution of the internet has also caused a revolution in the area of copyright. What was once a special set of laws concerning a small set of creators of artistic works now applies to everyone and everything that has a presence on the internet. The Office is attached to the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center and is intended to be the central resource for all matters concerning copyright.

We provide training in the form of live seminars and webcasts about the policy and the proper use of copyrights at the University. It is our intention to promote the progress of education and scholarly research and promote open access policies where possible.

The Office of Copyright can also offer guidance and advice on the use of Trademarks and the Right of Publicity, except to the extent the advice is sought on a Trademark owned by the University. The Office of Copyright does not provide guidance or advice with regards to Patents.

The Office has on staff an attorney licensed in the State of Florida, with over 25 years of experience in the area of copyright law. While the library staff is not authorized to give legal advice, the Office of Copyright will give guidance and advice on specific legal questions from the students, staff and faculty regarding copyright. However, please understand that the Copyright Officer represents the University as a whole and not any individual.

The information provided by the NSU Office of Copyright is intended for informational and educational purposes only, is not intended to be the provision of legal advice or counsel, and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Specific questions regarding copyright may be addressed to scarlisle@nova.edu, by calling Stephen Carlisle at X24608, or by scheduling an in-person consultation. We are located in the Alvin Sherman Library, second floor in the Research D/ILS suite of offices at office 2012.

Some questions can be answered promptly, while some may require research and some might require a review of the material in question.
